loose-leaf-teas-in-cups

Special thanks to: Black Girl Long Hair

There are many environmental factors that contribute to unhealthy hair. Heat, dry indoor air, hair dyes, shampoos, and styling products can lead to breakage, split ends, stunted growth, dry and brittle natural hair. A hair rinse is a very inexpensive way to treat and strengthen hair and scalp, and many ingredients can be found in your kitchen.

Herbal rinses can help with circulation in the scalp, aiding in the stimulation of the hair follicle which leads to hair growth. Some have the potential to help repair scalp disorders such as dandruff, itchy or flaky scalp and stunted hair growth.
Here are 7 of my favorite hair rinses:

1. Sage Hair Rinse — for Invigorating and Cleansing
Sage helps cleanse the hair of oil buildup and promotes healthier hair.

Recipe
2 cups boiling water
2 tsp. dried sage (or 1/2 cup fresh sage leaves)
Pour the water over the sage and steep until cool. Remove (or strain) the sage and apply to freshly washed hair. Don’t forget to massage into your scalp!

2. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse — for Cleansing and Clarifying
If you haven’t tried an ACV rinse yet, you must be living under a rock! Okay, kidding but seriously the ACV rinse is one of the easiest and most popular hair rinses within the natural hair community. Click here to discover six apple cider vinegar rinse recipes.

3. Beer Hair Rinse — for Sheen, Body and Resilience
Once a month, you can use flat beer to rinse your hair. Yep, beer! Beer acts as a natural “setting lotion” and works great in adding vitality to hair when blow drying. The added sheen and body comes from the natural sugars and the B vitamins that are found in beer. You can try my Beer &Vinegar Green Tea hair recipe and see if you feel a difference in your hair.

4. Birch Leaf Hair Rinse — to Prevent Hair Loss, Maintain Scalp Health and Soften Hair
When used on a regular basis, the birch leaf rinse will help prevent hair loss and maintain the overall health of your hair and scalp. Birch leaf will also soften the hair and add sheen.

Recipe
2 cups boiling water
2 tsp dried birch leaves
Pour boiling water over birch leaves and steep until cool. Strain and pour over clean hair. Massage into scalp. Caution: Consult your physician before using this rinse if you are allergic to wild carrot, mugwort, celery, and certain spices. Also know that birch leaf can darken hair over time.
5. Chamomile Hair Rinse — for Soothing and Healing the Scalp, Giving Hair Sheen
Chamomile has been used for centuries to add in relieving stress and restlessness at bedtime.  It is also great for soothing an itchy or sore scalp. It has also been said to heal scalp ailments such as dandruff, dry patches and eczema.

Recipe

2 cups boiling water
2 tsp. dried chamomile (or fresh chamomile if available)
Pour boiling water over chamomile and steep until cool. Strain and pour over clean hair. Massage into scalp. Caution: Chamomile has been known to lighten hair.

6. Linden-Flower Hair Rinse — to Promote Healthy Hair Growth, and Strengthen Dry and Brittle Hair
Linden-flower is great if you’re dealing with dry, brittle hair as a result of over-dying or dying the hair too often. For hair that is severely damaged, linden-flower will aid in overly brittle hair. It also promotes circulation in the scalp and will help new hair grow in healthier.

Recipe

2 cups boiling water
2 tsp. linden flowers
Pour boiling water over linden flowers and steep until cool. Strain and pour over clean hair. Massage into scalp.

7. Lemon & Tea Tree Scalp Rinse — for Flaky Scalp and Excessive Dandruff
Lemons are very versatile and they can be used for so many things! Lemon juice is great for treating oily dandruff but be careful, using too much lemon juice can dry out your hair.  Caution: Lemon juice can lighten your hair, especially if you tend to play in the sun a lot.

Recipe
4 tbsp lemon juice (use real lemons!)
5 drops tea tree essential oil
3 cups hot water
Add 5 drops tea tree oil and 4 tbsp of freshly squeezed lemon juice to 2 cups of hot water. Pour over hair and avoid getting into eyes. Massage into scalp and rinse out. Follow up with a clarifying conditioner.

What are some of your favorite hair rinses?

Straight Razor Shaving

Like most men, you probably hate shaving.

But let's face it, everyone and we mean, EVERYONE loves our lovers skin smoothly shaven, above or below the belt!  You learned all about that in our manscaping article.  ;)

And for years, you've thought you hated it. It gives you a rash. And you don't like the smell of the cheap cans of drugstore shaving foam.

Let us tell you about a little shop downtown at the My Florist Center just down the street from where you work.

Salon D' Shayn has been renown for years in the Scottsdale valley for providing the best in haircuts, color, skincare (spa facials) and their famous Brazilian Wax.

Just one year ago this boutique salon voted #1 by Yelp!, 944 magazine, Haute Living and AZ Central for 3 years in a row, opened up it's second location in Downtown Phoenix.  What makes this place so special?

They have a full service men's barber.

Some of you might be familiar with the typical Phoenix barber scene where you can get a good clean shave and a fade, and even a free beer, but might leave with a few knicks or possibly some unnecessary roughness that can come from being "man" handled.

Here is what Brit's most faithful customer has to say:

“Shaving has become a nice, sensory ritual,” Khademi says. “It smells good. It feels good. And my skin reacts well to it.” - Jayson Ali Khademi, Phoenix

He’s not alone.

For the past few decades, men have been sold the story that they need to use disposable and electric shavers because they’re easy. They’re safe. And they’re fast. Race-car fast. We’ve all seen the TV commercials: towel-clad handsome men drag disposable razors across their lather-covered faces, as if those pieces of coloured plastic hold the secret to true manliness. Sometimes there are race cars, too.

But lately, men are realizing a good shave is about more than cheap foam, plastic and fast cars. Sales of disposables are falling; according to The Economist, Schick, a prominent maker of disposable razors, is reporting a 10 per cent drop in sales this year, and Gillette’s figures are similar.

Instead, men are rediscovering the pleasures of the old-fashioned wet shave: safety razors, straight razors, fancy soaps and even fancier brushes.

The old-school gear is a throwback to a time when shaving wasn’t necessarily a chore. It was a manly sign of coming of age.

“Men have been told that shaving is a pain for so long,” says Knifewear owner Kevin Kent. “But I argue that, when done right, it’s meaningful ritual. It’s a moment of focus and self-indulgence in the morning. And it feels good.”

We can likely thank Hollywood for at least some of the resurgence. The suave Don Draper made it look pretty easy on the TV show Mad Men. (A little too easy, in fact. Who isn’t sort of surprised he still has his adam’s apple?)

Then there’s the sexy scene in Skyfall, where James Bond’s lover, straight razor in hand, takes care of his, uh, whiskers. “It’s all about trust,” reads one of the comments posted under the YouTube clip from the film.

Or money, depending what business you’re in. Kent says straight razor sales at his store skyrocketed 150 per cent after the film’s release.

On any given day, you’ll see men of all ages — pierced and tattooed twenty-somethings, hipster dads and grandpas — checking out the wooden cases and glass shelves laden with brushes, scuttles and soaps. (They even sell Ungarische Bartwichse, the Hungarian moustache wax used by the surrealist artist Salvador Dali.) There are sleek little gear stands, heavy leather strops and, of course, razors, both safety and straight.

Here is what you can expect from a straight razor shave . . .

Brit McCulley, Barber and salon manager, takes you through her process.

It starts with a soothing beard oil that nourishes and softens the skin.  This is applied and massaged into the face to relax you and soften your coarse hair.

Once the oil has been absorbed into the hair and skin, a rich, hot lather is brushed gently using a soft bristle brush.

Next, Brit applies a steamy hot towel directly to the now softened, lathered, nice smelling hair to further relax you and open up the pores for an extreme close shave.

Another layer of Salon D' Shayn's nourishing hot lather is then brushed onto the hair and Brit begins the first of her famous two pass shave with her straight razor.

The first pass follows the direction of your hair which cuts as close as any quadruple bladed mach speed, electric or fancy shmancy razor you can find.

As if this shave wasn't close enough, she completes yet another pass against the grain leaving your skin smoother than you thought was possible.

Finally, since you're enjoying yourself so much, she gently applies a soothing aftershave and finally a cooling talc powder.

(She even throws in a free beer!)

Manscaping Dos and Dont's

Manscaping Dos

Buy the right tools

A disposable razor and some shaving cream won’t cut it. The truth is, if you’re really covered in a carpet, you shouldn’t be shaving anyway. Instead, find an experienced waxing expert such as one of the expert Brazilian waxing experts at Salon D' Shayn.  These aestheticians have been removing body hair from men and women for years and know how to leave you smooth and natural.

Otherwise, grab an electric trimmer with a guard that has adjustable settings for length. The big brands have recently repackaged these gadgets specifically for manscaping activities, but they’re really just tried-and-true beard trimmers. That’s what you want.

Trim your chest

No one needs to see a tuft of tresses creeping over your shirt collar, or worse, a complete carpet at the beach. Use that electric trimmer to thin things down to a fairly uniform density. How low you go is a personal preference, but avoid pruning yourself into massive five o'clock shadow.

Clean up your underarms

There should be some hair there, but a full-on forest isn't recommended. Groom the grass down to a length slightly longer than the surrounding countryside. Ultimately, they should look like pits without looking like the pits.

Wax your back and shoulders

OK, OK. So McConaughey got this one right. There are places that should glide like a Slip 'n Slide — namely, your back and shoulders. Get them waxed by a professional every six weeks or so. If you're a member of the more hirsute set or prone to breakouts, look into laser hair removal.

Mow down the bush

You need to maintain your manhood, too. A little less lawn makes the tree appear taller. Make it look natural. Your manscaping efforts shouldn't look manufactured. Trimming your pubic hair into a triangle, for example, is a definite no-no. Bottom line: If it's too perfect, we'd file that as a fail.

Manscaping Don'ts

Use at-home waxes or sprays

DIY is fine for arts and crafts or caulking a tub. But when it comes to removing body hair with a drugstore depilatory, taking matters into your own hands will likely end in blood, sweat and a nasty rash.  Find an aesthetician we keep telling you about, but not just anyone, make sure this expert comes highly recommended and is experienced.

Clean-shave your chest, arms or legs

Attempting to clear cut what God gave you isn't just wholly unnatural, but it can be incredibly uncomfortable and unsightly (think prickly patches with a healthy dose of razor burn). If you've been blessed with body hair, you should own it along with that electric trimmer we told you to buy.   If you must go clean, make sure you enlist the help of an aesthetician such as those experts at Salon D' Shayn.

Leave any defined lines

An artificial boundary of where hair ends and smooth skin begins isn't exactly attractive. This typically happens when one has elected to partake in an unapproved method of manscaping, like, say, clean-shaving a body part with a razor. Stick with a professional who does body waxing, and you'll never have to worry about doing this don't.

Forget about your backside

Most men's rears aren't exactly follicle free. Since we're serious supporters of a waxed back, you'll need to make sure (with the help of a mirror, yoga classes and that handy trimmer) that there isn't a heap of hair waiting below the waistline.

Go bare down there

You're a man, right? Feel free to tidy up the place (in fact, we highly recommend it), but please don't turn yourself into a prepubescent boy.

Sorting out your manscaping strategy shouldn't include a whole host of tools or an unhealthy desire to look like a second-rate stripper. All you really need is a professional aesthetician to do your waxing,  a beard trimmer and enough sense to know that hairless legs are for swimmers and 6-year-olds.

Salon D' Shayn's Brazilian waxing Queen and mother of manscaping, D'Lisa Shayn agrees for the most part.  But since she is the absolute best in town when it comes to Male Brazilian waxing, she does think that it is great when men manscape and believes that you should always get rid of the hair on your shaft, yes, that shaft.  But do not shave it!

That makes it quite prickly and that is no good for your lover whomever she or he may be.
Most of my clients get my "Baseball" wax, which is the bat, the balls and the dugout. Yes the dugout is your backside!

This is a better alternative for many men than going completely bare and it looks very natural. Not to mention you get rid of those pesky hairs on your shaft, trim down your bush and BOOM! you look bigger. I swear it is true.... come see me at Salon D' Shayn Scottsdale and Salon D' Shayn Phoenix and try it for yourself...

Are you in a Hair Cut Rut???

Knowing when it's time to make a change to your hair isn't always easy—if this article isn't speaking to you, maybe you know someone who never realized how outdated their looks were.

Ask yourself these following questions:

1. Has it been more than five years since you rethought your style? Even the most classic look needs occasional tweaks.

2. Typically when you look in the mirror, do you love your hair? It seems like a simple question, but when life gets busy, it's easy to think, "Well, it's okay/fine/best I can do." Talk with a stylist about options you might like more.

3. Do you see your haircut—or anything remotely similar—in any current magazine? If your answer is no, except in a "before" photo, your style probably needs to be refreshed.

Vanessa Ripoyla of Salon D' Shayn's Downtown Phoenix hair salon shows off some of her recent work here.  She loves to experiment with new looks but prides herself in her ability to employ the edgiest of hair cuts perfectly to fit your face and personality.

Being unique and natural are two extremes that Vanessa combines to give you a hair style new and exciting that you know you will love!

Before and After Haircut & Color by Lydia Martinez

5 Things To Know Before Coloring Your Hair

Whether you’re refreshing your highlights for the summer or going all out with colored dip-dye, there are a few things you need to know before going under the foils.  Lydia Martinez, Phoenix RAW hair stylist at the swanky Salon D' Shayn in Downtown Phoenix tells all.

Going Lighter is More Damaging Than Going Darker

If you’re interested in making a change, but aren’t sure which way to go, consider going darker, especially if you already have dry or damaged hair. Martinez says, “When you are coloring darker, you are actually depositing color as opposed to stripping it out of the cortex. This is a much harsher procedure and it takes a harsher chemical: bleach.” While we love our blond highlights, we’ll be considering some caramel or cocoa shades next time we head to the salon.

‘Virgin Hair’ is Best For Coloring

The healthier your hair, the better your color will look. “The less you have colored it, the easier it is for your stylist to make your new color look great,” says Martinez. Use regular deep conditioning treatments in the weeks leading up to your appointment to get your hair in the best shape.

Don’t Wash Your Hair Ahead of Time

Don’t be embarrassed to see your stylist with dirty hair. In fact, Lydia  says it’s best if you don’t wash ahead of time. “A good rule of thumb before you get your hair colored is ‘do nothing.’ If you get your hair colored after a shampoo or stimulation it can burn your scalp.” Yikes!

Don’t Condition as Soon as You Leave the Salon

Lydia recommends waiting a few days to give your hair a deep conditioning treatment because they can cause your color to fade. “Unless you’ve bleached—then condition as soon as you like! Depending on hair type and dryness, once a week is a good regimen.” If hair is really damaged, feel free to deep condition every day and consider a professional treatment at a salon.

Color-Protective Products Really Are Important

Do all those shampoos, conditioners, and styling aids that claim to protect your color actually do anything? Happily, yes! Lydia says, “They are more gentle and often have essential fatty acids that help to avoid stripping hair color. Often times they don’t have surfactants or sulphates that might strip color or sebum.”

Take a look at some recent "Before & After" shots from real clients by Lydia Martinez - Salon D' Shayn - Downtown Phoenix.

Brazilian Waxing Tips

So, you’re thinking about getting a Brazilian wax…

Like most people, you’ve probably been thinking about getting it done for a while. So here you are… you’ve graduated to the research phase. Searching for that special place because you’re certainly not going to just trust any old Brazilian Waxing person to have this done! You want the best possible experience and you have standards. Good…Your wait is over. You found us. To get the best possible results your first time out, (or any time out) here are some things to keep in mind.

Length Matters

Your hair “down there” must be at least ¼ inch (about the length of a grain of rice) for the wax to successfully grasp the shaft and pull the hair out. For most people that will take about 2-3 weeks of growth, so be patient. If your hair has grown quiet long, you might think “Hmmm, I should probably trim this down before I get waxed.” Please Don’t! Most people who decide to trim end up cutting the hair too short and can not be waxed until the hair grows a bit longer.

Pill Popping

Most people want to know if they can take something beforehand… You bet! We recommend an Anti inflammatory (or two) about 45 min – an hour before your appointment. Do Not take aspirin or any other blood thinner as it can make your follicles more prone to spotting. Oh, and PLEASE disclose any substances, prescribed or otherwise, that you are taking. (we need to know and we don’t judge.)

Scrub-a-Dub

There are always layers of dead skin cells on our bodies. Those pesky dead skin cells love to build up around and on top of your hair follicles, making hair more resistant to being pulled out and causing some nasty ingrown hairs. Using a body scrub about 3x per week along with daily use of ingrown hair treatment products are recommended to remove the dead skin and keep the follicles open and healthy.

Plan Ahead

Waxing for a special occasion is a great idea! Keep in mind most people have course hair “down there”, and all people have three different hair-growth cycles. What does that mean? Honestly, that means it typically takes a few months of waxing regularly (every 4 weeks) to attain that “completely clean” result everyone wants. Extremely course hair will be more resistant and may take even longer. Luckily, there are products that help.

F.Y.I.

Nightly use of treatment products that contain salicylic acid like Tend Skin® actually help to make hair less resistant to waxing. Salicylic acid breaks down the bonds between dead skin cells. By washing away the dead cells caught in the follicle, the hair can be removed easier with less irritation to the skin.

Modesty

Alright, we should probably talk about the elephant in the room… To get waxed, you’ll need to be somewhat exposed to the person waxing you. This can be an issue for someone contemplating waxing. Maybe we can ease your mind by telling you a bit about us. The Dynamic Duo of Aestheticians at Salon D’Shayn have nearly 35 years of waxing experience between them. (We kind of wrote the book on it.) They share the same devotion to empowering people through beauty and the philosophy that each flower is unique and beautiful in this wonderful garden of humanity. No really, we actually say that. We are great at what we do and we have dedicated our lives to taking care of others. It truly is who we are. You are in good hands.

The Net Generation Gals

We have noticed a growing trend of ladies under the age of 18 wanting waxing services. This is a good thing. The younger you start waxing, the less body hair you’ll have to deal with when you get older. That being said, we do require parental consent. So, start wearing down Mom and Dad to bring you in for some waxing. Maybe start by showing them our website!

Shave And A Haircut…

Actually, a shave IS a haircut. It is also a skin cut. Hopefully not cut all the way to the blood vessels, but the razor does cut into the epidermal layer. That can cause problems for many people. Irritation, itching, rash…some may even develop darker skin due to a thickening of the epidermis. If you normally shave, (I know it’s difficult) you’ll need to let your hair grow for at least 2 weeks, maybe longer, to be waxed properly. Waxing the hair will pull the hair out as opposed to cutting it off at the surface. The benefits are numerous. After waxing, hair typically won’t grow back for a couple weeks, only about 40% of your hair will start growing back, and the hairs that do come back are softer and thinner. With regular waxing folks who had darker areas find that their skin tones even out nicely. Also, with waxing… no itching! That’s right, no more embarrassing moments of trying to find somewhere to discreetly scratch yourself.

Self Tanning

If you are a self tanner, good for you! Way to stay out of the sun, but keep in mind that waxing will remove the top layer of pigment. To avoid having patches of your skin looking much lighter than the rest, it’s best to try to exfoliate as much of the self tanner off before you get waxed. Try using a good scrub daily for a few days prior to your appointment. Once your hair is removed, self tan to your heart’s content. FYI: waxing prior to a spray/self tan will prolong the effects of self tanner providing a smoother, more natural looking tan.

Why are we the Best?

At Salon D' Shayn you will find two of the valley's best Aestheticians, Courtenay Weitzel and Taylor Royer alongside the Queen of Brazilian Waxing for men and women, D'Lisa Shayn.  Whether you are a first time Brazilian Waxer or have been getting a Brazilian, Male Brazilian Waxing or just a bikini wax for a while, we guarantee you will have the best, least painful Brazilian waxing experience.  Voted "Best Place to Get Waxed" four years in a row and proudly bearing the coveted five-star Brazilian Waxing Salon rating on Yelp!, Salon D' Shayn continues to be the best place for all of your waxing needs with two convenient locations: Old Town Scottsdale and Downtown Phoenix.

Healthy Scalp Tips for Healthy Hair

There's no such thing as healthy hair. Hair is basically protein and has no nervous system or blood supply and, as such, does not have repairing properties. The scalp, on the other hand, does. Since your hair is an extension of the scalp, it makes sense that a healthy scalp helps ensure healthy looking hair. For keeping that scalp healthy, follow these quick and easy scalp care tips for men.

Wash Daily

Keeping your scalp clean is key to minimizing clogged pores and other scalp problems. Use a gentle shampoo and wash once each day, working the shampoo into the hair and scalp for about two minutes. Don't bother with the "rinse and repeat" part. One good wash should be sufficient.

Exfoliate Weekly

Once or twice per week, remove dead skin cells and dirt from the scalp with an exfoliating scrub. Make sure it is a scrub made for the face that is gentle enough to be used on the scalp.

Massage

Scalp massage is beneficial because it helps promote good blood flow to the scalp, helps to keep the scalp flexible, soothes nerves and relaxes muscles. Scalp massage also promotes hair growth and luster. It feels great, too. One each week, massage the scalp with the fingertips using a firm pressure in a circular motion. Place the fingers under the hair to avoid pulling. Perform this exercise for three or four minutes.

Avoid Drying Problems

One of the main causes of dry scalp is shampooing with water that is too hot. This can strip essentials oils from the skin and cause dryness. Wash hair in lukewarm water to help retain those essential oils. Excessive blow drying of the hair can also promote a dry scalp. If you notice excessive drying, a good leave-in conditioner can help replenish moisture to the scalp.

Maintaining a great looking head of hair starts with a healthy scalp. Follow the tips above to help ensure yours stays in great shape.

Benefits of Straight Razor Shaving

This is a fantastic post by Fashion Blog's Marcelene on the many benefits of straight razor shaving.

Salon D' Shayn's very own Brit McCulley specializes in the straight razor shave which is just one of her many male pampering talents. Since it opened it's doors last year in 2012, Salon D' Shayn now offers a professional full service barber shop.

Shaving is used every day in our world. Whether you are a well groomed man or a man that favors facial hair, it is a common occurrence sometime in your life. When shaving, many men prefer the multi blade razors but often complain of razor bumps and irritation. You may also hear complaints that it does not get close enough to their faces and they still have a little stubble.

Using straight razor blades will help stop all of these many complaints and will get a closer and cleaner shave. Although it is initially pricey depending on the type of razor you get, over time it will save you money. You will be able to resharpen your razor making it like new and will not have any problems with the durability of the razor. Straight razors are known for their longevity and quality.

Keep your Skin Healthy

Irritation is very common when shaving, it will hurt and will cause redness and sores. It is also ignored many times which can cause infections and ingrown hairs. When your skin is irritated, you are less likely to shave on a daily basis. To stop this from happening, you need to use a straight razor blade, also commonly known as open razors or cut-throat razors. It is very beneficial for skin exfoliation. By using the traditional use of mugs, brushes, and soap; it will take off a layer of skin causing new layers of skin to regrow which will make the skin smoother. This is very beneficial to your skin and will make it become healthier and clearer. It is also very important to make sure your razor is cleaned. You need to clean it thoroughly after each shave and have it dry completely. If you feel any drag as you shave, you need to stop using the shaver and have it sharpened, which will give you the best shave and help keep your skin healthy.

Get a Close Shave

Shaving can be a hassle. It takes time and some people don’t shave as often as they would like because of the time it takes. By getting a closer shave, your face will stay soft for a longer time by using a straight razor rather than a multi blade razor. By sharpening the razor often, you will get a nice clean shave every time. It is also less likely to slip which helps prevent cutting yourself. By getting a closer shave, you will look more professional and won’t have to worry about your skin getting red. If you lather properly and make sure your razor is clean, you will notice the difference every time you shave.

Enjoy Shaving Again

Shaving with a straight razor blade is a lost technique. Not very many people shave this way because they think it is too hard and not as safe. This is not the case. It will give you the shave you have been looking for and will make you feel satisfied after each shave. Learning to properly shave this way, you will look better and feel better about yourself. It is also a wise investment. You will not have to buy another razor again. You can also customize it to your wants with the make, model, materials, width of the blade; whatever is best for your needs. This razor will last the rest of your life and you will be so much happier that you no longer have to use the disposable razor blades that are known to cause irritation. You can never go wrong with a closer shave!
